This 1974 Soviet postcard features one of the main landmarks of Poltava — the Monument of Glory, located in the center of the historic Round Square.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the cast-iron column of the Monument of Glory, topped with a gilded bronze eagle holding a laurel wreath in its beak. The monument is set on a granite pedestal shaped as a truncated pyramid, surrounded by a metal fence and vintage cannons embedded in the ground. People in 1970s summer attire are seen walking along the pathways of the Korpusnyi Garden.
Historical note
The Monument of Glory was unveiled on June 27, 1811, to commemorate the Battle of Poltava of 1709. The design was created by architect Jean-François Thomas de Thomon, with sculptural elements sculpted by Feodosiy Shchedrin. The column was cast at the Luhansk Foundry, and the cannons built into the base and fence were genuine pieces from the Poltava Fortress.
Present day
Currently, the Monument of Glory holds the status of a historical and architectural monument of national significance. Korpusnyi Garden remains a popular leisure spot for residents and visitors of Poltava. The monumental composition of the city’s central square has fully preserved its historic classicist appearance.
