Historical note
The Kherson State Pedagogical Institute was founded in 1917 on the basis of the evacuated Yuryev Teachers’ Institute. In 1944, it was named after N. K. Krupskaya. During the Soviet era, the institute expanded significantly, with new academic buildings constructed in the Soviet modernist style.
Karantynny Island, located in the Dnieper Delta, historically served quarantine sanitary purposes for the port, and later developed into a popular recreational area with water stations, beaches, and holiday bases.
Present day
In 1998, the Pedagogical Institute was reorganized into the Kherson State Pedagogical University, and in 2002, it achieved the status of a comprehensive university (Kherson State University – KSU). The academic building on Universytetska Street continues to serve as the institution’s main administrative and educational hub.
The recreational area of Karantynny Island remains a site for local leisure and water sports, though many Soviet-era wooden structures have degraded.
