What is shown on the postcard

The 1983 postcard shows the facade of the Donetsk Opera House, designed in the style of socialist classicism. The building features a central portico with arched windows and columns. A busy street with pedestrians and urban transport runs in front of the theatre. A red and white trolleybus, likely a Skoda 9Tr or similar model, and a blue car are visible. Elements of urban infrastructure include streetlights and road markings. To the right of the theatre building is a well-maintained green area with lawns and a single spruce tree, alongside other trees lining the street.

Historical note

Construction of the Donetsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre began in 1936, based on the design by architect L.V. Kuskov, and its grand opening took place in 1941. Initially, the theatre was known as the “Stalino Russian State Opera and Ballet Theatre.” The building is a prominent example of pre-war Soviet neoclassical architecture. Although damaged during World War II, it was restored and modernized in the post-war years.

Present day

Currently, the Donetsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre continues its operations. In 1992, the theatre was named after the outstanding Ukrainian opera singer Anatoliy Borysovych Solovyanenko. It remains one of the city’s main cultural venues, regularly presenting opera and ballet performances.
