This 1963 Soviet postcard features a view of the monument to the prominent writer Nikolai Gogol in Poltava.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard depicts the bronze figure of the seated writer on a high pedestal. Nikolai Gogol is shown in deep thought, with an open book in his left hand and a pencil in his right. The monument is situated in the middle of a shaded alley (now Gogol Square). Wooden park benches with resting citizens are visible on both sides of the monument. In the background, there are dense green trees and a fragment of a building with white awnings over the windows.

Historical note

The bronze monument to N. Gogol was created by sculptor Leonid Pozen back in 1913 to commemorate the centennial of the writer’s birth. However, due to World War I, subsequent revolutionary events, and bureaucratic obstacles, its installation was delayed. The monument was officially unveiled only in 1934 at the intersection of Ivanov Street (now Gogol Street) and Lenin Street (now Nebesna Sotnya Street).

Present day

Today, the monument to Nikolai Gogol is designated as a monument of monumental art of national significance and is a major landmark in Poltava. The surrounding public square is well-maintained, and the monument itself is preserved in its original historical state.
