This Soviet art postcard from 1978 depicts the building of the Kherson Maritime School named after Lieutenant Schmidt, one of the oldest maritime educational institutions in Ukraine.
What is shown on the postcard
The foreground shows the corner section of the three-story academic building, designed as a semi-circular rotunda with a dome and decorative Ionic columns. The upper frieze of the rotunda is adorned with bas-reliefs of anchors and garlands. Festive posters are placed on the walls between the columns: one with the Russian inscription “The Heroic Deed of the Heroes Will Live for Centuries!” and another featuring a Soviet liberator soldier. A group of cadets in naval uniforms is gathered near the main entrance, which features a rusticated ground floor.
Historical note
The Kherson Maritime School traces its history back to the merchant marine class established in 1834. The building shown on the postcard was constructed in the mid-20th century on Ushakov Avenue and represents a prominent example of Soviet Neoclassicism. During the Soviet era, the school was named after Lieutenant Pyotr Schmidt and trained navigators and marine engineers for the merchant fleet.
Present day
Today, this building houses the Kherson State Maritime Academy (KSMA). The institution continues to train maritime transport professionals. While the historical appearance of the main building with its rotunda has been largely preserved, the Soviet-era festive decorations have been removed.
