Historical note
The ‘Young Guard’ Museum was founded in 1944 to commemorate the members of the underground youth organization active during World War II. The new modernist building, designed by architect V. Yelyzarov, was officially opened in 1970 to mark the 25th anniversary of the victory. The interior design, including large-scale mosaics, became a prominent example of late Soviet monumental art from the turn of the 1970s.
Present day
Today, the museum building, along with its Soviet modernist decor and mosaics, is preserved in the city of Sorokyne (formerly Krasnodon), Luhansk Oblast. The museum continues to operate as a historical site, housing exhibitions dedicated to the mid-20th-century events.
