Historical note
The Kherson Regional Music and Drama Theatre building was constructed in the post-war period and officially opened in October 1962. The design of the building blended classical architectural forms with Soviet neoclassicism. The monument to Nikolay Subbota—a machine-gunner who distinguished himself during the crossing of the Dnieper and the liberation of Kherson in March 1944—was erected in the square near the theatre in 1970 to commemorate the war victory.
Present day
Today, the theatre is named after the prominent Ukrainian playwright Mykola Kulish and holds academic status. The theatre building and the adjacent square with the monument remain key elements of the architectural ensemble of Teatralna Square in the historical center of Kherson.
