What is shown on the postcard

In the foreground, the bronze seated statue of Nikolai Gogol is depicted, mounted on a high gray granite pedestal. The writer is shown in a thoughtful pose, holding an open book in his left hand. A small flower bed is arranged at the base of the monument. Dense green trees line both sides of the pathway, creating a shaded alley. On the right, wooden park benches with visitors are visible. In the background, the facades of residential or public buildings feature white awnings over the ground-floor windows.

Historical note

The monument to Gogol in Poltava was created by the renowned sculptor Leonid Pozen. The design was completed in 1913 for the centenary of the writer’s birth (celebrated in 1909). However, due to bureaucratic delays by the Tsarist government, followed by World War I and revolutionary turmoil, the installation was postponed for over two decades. The sculptor gifted the bronze statue to the city. The monument was finally unveiled in 1934 at its current location within a specially designed public garden.

Present day

Today, the monument to Nikolai Gogol is classified as a monument of monumental art of national significance and remains one of Poltava’s landmarks. The surrounding public square continues to be a popular walking destination for locals and tourists. The general appearance of the monument and the layout of the square have largely preserved the historical look captured in the 1963 postcard.
