This two-part Soviet postcard from 1987 features the memorial complex dedicated to the anti-fascist underground organization ‘Young Guard’ in Sorokyne (formerly Krasnodon), Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine.
What is shown on the postcard
The left side of the postcard depicts ‘The Oath’ monument standing on a granite pedestal in front of the Young Guard Museum, with a group of school children on the green lawn. The right side shows a ceremony with school students in uniform standing in front of a colorful mosaic mural, with one student kneeling before a red banner.
Historical note
Created by sculptors V. Mukhin, V. Fedchenko, and I. Chumatchenko, ‘The Oath’ monument was officially unveiled in September 1954. It depicts the core members of the underground group taking their solemn pledge. The museum building in the background was completed later, in 1970.
Present day
The memorial complex in Sorokyne retains its original layout. Both the monument and the museum building remain preserved as historic sites dedicated to the local history of the Second World War.
