This 1971 Soviet postcard features the monument “Glory to Soviet Soldiers-Liberators,” formerly located in the resort city of Truskavets, Lviv Oblast.
What is shown on the postcard
The image depicts a modernist war memorial complex. At the center of the composition is a vertical pylon faced with dark tiles, holding a large bronze-colored bas-relief of a Soviet soldier’s head in a helmet. To the left of the pylon is a rectangular concrete arch housing an eternal flame bowl, with a multi-figure bas-relief of soldiers and workers on its outer side. To the right is a long concrete wall with additional thematic bas-reliefs. The monument is fronted by a paved area and flower beds, with thin trees and a clear blue sky in the background.
Historical note
The memorial complex was erected during the Soviet era to honor Red Army soldiers who died in the region during World War II. It served as the central site for official commemorative events and wreath-laying ceremonies in Truskavets. This postcard captures the monument in its original state as of 1971.
Present day
As part of Ukraine’s national decommunization and de-Russification policies, the memorial complex on Stepana Bandery Street in Truskavets was completely dismantled in 2023. The concrete structures, bas-reliefs, and Soviet symbols were removed from the site, and the military graves adjacent to the monument were scheduled for exhumation and relocation to the local municipal cemetery.
