What is shown on the postcard
In the foreground on the right is the bronze monument ‘The Oath’ on a round tiered granite pedestal. In the background on the left, the modernist two-story building of the ‘Young Guard’ museum is visible, featuring a light stone facade. In front of the building, a group of Soviet schoolchildren (pioneers) in white shirts and dark trousers or skirts walk across the square, one holding a red flag.
Historical note
The memorial complex is dedicated to the underground youth organization ‘Young Guard’, which operated in the occupied town during World War II. The monument ‘The Oath’, created by sculptors V. I. Mukhin, V. Kh. Fedchenko, and I. P. Chumak, was unveiled in 1954. The new museum building, designed by architects V. G. Smirnov and A. A. Ignashchenko, opened for the 30th anniversary of the organization in 1970.
Present day
Today, the memorial complex retains its historical and commemorative status. Following decommunization laws in Ukraine in 2016, the city was renamed back to its historical name, Sorokyne, though the complex remains closely associated with the history of Krasnodon in historical archives and postcards.
