What is shown on the postcard
The image shows a three-story building of the maritime school with a semi-basement ground floor, built in the style of Soviet classicism. The main architectural feature is the corner semi-circular rotunda with a colonnade, topped by a dome with a spire. The frieze of the rotunda is decorated with embossed anchor reliefs. Paved paths, decorative trees, shrubs, and streetlights are visible in front of the entrance.
Historical note
The Kherson Maritime School traces its history back to the first merchant navigation school in the south, opened in 1834. During the Soviet period, the educational institution trained mid-level specialists for the civil merchant navy. In 1970, by a decree of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR, the school was named after Lieutenant P. P. Schmidt.
Present day
Currently, this historic building houses the Kherson State Maritime Academy. The building has retained its main architectural features and continues to serve its educational purpose, remaining an important urban landmark on the city’s central avenue.
