A 1982 postcard depicting the ‘Yubileiny’ Cinema and Concert Hall in Kherson, one of the landmark examples of Soviet modernist architecture in southern Ukraine.
What is shown on the postcard
The photograph captures the modernist building of the ‘Yubileiny’ Cinema and Concert Hall with its distinctive curved facade and cable-suspended roof. In front of the building, there is a public square with an active circular fountain, lawns, and occasional pedestrians. A decorative high relief is clearly visible on the lower section of the facade.
Historical note
The ‘Yubileiny’ Cinema and Concert Hall was opened in 1970 to mark the centenary of Vladimir Lenin’s birth, which gave the venue its name. The project was designed by Soviet architects G. P. Sokolovsky and G. V. Frolov. The architectural highlight of the structure is its innovative cable-suspended roof system, which allowed for a pillar-free auditorium capable of seating 1,700 people. The building quickly became a major landmark of Soviet Kherson.
Present day
In the post-Soviet era, the complex continued to serve as the city’s primary venue for concerts and exhibitions, retaining its original modernist aesthetic and decorative features. During the military conflicts in 2022–2024, the building suffered severe damage from shelling.
