What is shown on the postcard
The postcard depicts a long, four-story hotel building designed in the style of Soviet modernism. A key architectural feature of the facade is the zig-zag pattern of bay window balconies. Historical note
The “Tourist” hotel complex in Cherkasy was constructed in the early 1970s to accommodate Soviet and international tourists traveling via the all-Union Intourist agency and the Sputnik youth travel bureau. The building was erected on the high banks of the Dnieper River, at the beginning of the city’s main thoroughfare, Shevchenko Boulevard.
Present day
Today, the building retains its original modernist architectural style, though the hotel has been renamed to “Dnipro”. The interior spaces have undergone partial renovation, and the surrounding grounds are now lush and heavily shaded by the fully grown trees planted decades ago.
