This 1963 Soviet art postcard features a view of the Monument of Glory (the “Glory” Column) in Poltava, located in the center of the Round Square.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows a cast-iron triumphal column topped with a gilded bronze eagle holding a laurel wreath in its beak. The monument stands on a granite pedestal with a stepped base. In the foreground, vibrant red canna lilies with large green leaves are visible. In the middle ground, three children are seen standing near the steps of the monument. Historical note
The Monument of Glory was unveiled on June 27, 1811, to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Poltava (1709). Designed by architect Thomas de Thomon, its bronze sculptural details, including the eagle, were crafted by sculptors Ivan Martos and Feodosiy Shchedrin. The column was erected on the historical site where Peter I met with the defenders of the Poltava fortress after the battle.
Present day
Today, the monument remains in its original position at the center of the Korpusnyi Garden (Round Square) in Poltava. While it is registered as a monument of cultural heritage in Ukraine, in recent years it has become a subject of public discussion in the context of decolonization policies.
