Card Central Square, Cherkassy, ??1973

This 1973 postcard captures the Central Square (now Soborna Square) in Cherkasy, featuring the monumental House of Soviets building and a monument.

What is shown on the postcard

The foreground of the postcard displays a landscaped pedestrian area with lawns, flowerbeds, and walking people. On the left is the monumental multi-story administrative building—the House of Soviets, decorated with a sculpted coat of arms on its attic. On the right side, a monument to V. I. Lenin stands on a pedestal. The background features Soviet-era residential apartment buildings and square greenery.

Historical note

The Central Square of Cherkasy began to form in the mid-19th century on the site of the former Market (Bazarna) Square. During the Soviet period, the square underwent significant reconstruction: in 1959, the House of Soviets was built to house the regional communist party committee and the regional executive committee, and a bronze monument to V. I. Lenin was erected in front of it.

Present day

Following Ukraine’s independence, the square was renamed Soborna (Cathedral) Square. In 2008, the Lenin monument was dismantled. Between 2011 and 2012, the square underwent a major renovation, which included replacing the paving, installing fountains, and updating the landscaping. The House of Soviets currently houses the Cherkasy Oblast Council and the Cherkasy Oblast State Administration.
