What is shown on the postcard
The foreground displays the facade of a two-story Neoclassical building with light-colored walls. The main entrance is adorned with a portico featuring four Corinthian columns and a triangular pediment. A grand double staircase with a stone balustrade leads up to the entrance. In front of the building, several female pedestrians in late-1960s summer attire walk along the paved path. A blooming chestnut tree is visible on the right, and green park trees are on the left.
Historical note
The building was constructed in 1896–1897, designed by architect F. I. Kuleshov specifically for the Kherson Public Library, which was founded in 1872. During the Soviet period, the library was designated as the regional library and named after the writer Maxim Gorky. The building is a registered local architectural monument.
Present day
In 1987, the regional library relocated to a new, spacious building on Dniprove Descent (now the Oles Honchar Regional Universal Scientific Library). The historical building in Torhovyi Lane was subsequently transferred to the city Registry Office (Wedding Palace), which continues to operate there today.
