Old postcards Pioneers
This section of Soviet Pioneer postcards currently holds a single card, Urochysta obitsianka pionera Radianskoho Soiuzu, printed in 1986. The Ukrainian title means “Solemn Promise of the Pioneer of the Soviet Union”, the pledge every schoolchild recited on joining the Young Pioneers.
The Young Pioneers, officially the Vladimir Lenin All-Union Pioneer Organization, were the Soviet mass organisation for children aged 9 to 14. They date their founding to 19 May 1922, when a conference of the Komsomol, the communist youth league, adopted a resolution on the children’s movement; 19 May was marked as Pioneer Day from then on. The organisation took Lenin’s name in 1924. New members recited the promise at a formal Pioneer line-up, then had a red neckerchief tied on and received a badge. The wording of the promise was revised several times, most recently in 1986, the year this card was printed.
The card comes from the final years of the organisation, which ceased to exist in September 1991, when the Komsomol dissolved itself.
