Card Train Station. Brest, 1973

This 1973 postcard features the main facade of the Brest-Centralny railway station, designed in the Soviet monumental classicism style.

What is shown on the postcard

In the foreground, the station square is visible, featuring a red-and-white international bus branded “Sovtransavto” with its distinct “S” logo. Several Soviet passenger cars, including a GAZ-21 Volga, and pedestrians are scattered across the square. The focal point of the image is the grand station building with a tall spire topped by a five-pointed star. The facade is adorned with a colonnade, arches, and decorative relief panels.

Historical note

The first railway station building in Brest was opened in 1886 in the presence of Emperor Alexander III. Damaged heavily during World War I, it was rebuilt in the 1920s in the Polish “Pomeranian” style. Between 1953 and 1957, the station underwent a grand reconstruction in the Stalinist Empire style, adding the majestic central tower and spire captured on this postcard.

Present day

Today, the Brest-Centralny railway station remains a vital transport hub linking Belarus with the European Union. The building is officially designated as an architectural monument of the Republic of Belarus and is carefully preserved, maintaining its mid-20th-century historical appearance virtually unchanged.
