Card Bridge over the legendary Mukhovets. Brest Fortress, 1972

A collectible 1972 Soviet postcard depicting the bridge over the Mukhavets River within the “Brest Hero-Fortress” memorial complex.

What is shown on the postcard

The image shows a reinforced concrete bridge crossing a branch of the Mukhavets River, leading towards the Citadel. A weeping willow grows on the left bank, its branches drooping toward the water. Decorative shrubs are planted along the right side of the bridge. In the background, the majestic 104-meter Bayonet Obelisk, the centerpiece of the memorial, rises into the sky. The bottom of the postcard features the Gold Star medal icon and the inscription “Brest Hero-Fortress” in multiple languages.

Historical note

The “Brest Hero-Fortress” memorial complex was officially opened on September 25, 1971. The bridges of the fortress played a key role during the defense in June 1941, being the sites of fierce fighting. During the post-war reconstruction and creation of the memorial, the damaged wooden bridges were replaced with durable concrete structures to facilitate visitor access to the Citadel ruins.

Present day

Today, this bridge continues to serve as a pedestrian pathway for visitors to the memorial complex. The fortress grounds are meticulously preserved, and the view of the Bayonet Obelisk and the Mukhavets River remains one of the most iconic sights in Brest.
