A 1968 Soviet color postcard depicting the famous Colonnade (belvedere) of the Vorontsov Palace in Odesa, which was known as the Palace of Pioneers during the Soviet era.
What is shown on the postcard
The postcard shows a semicircular colonnade of the Tuscan order, consisting of ten pairs of columns. In front of the colonnade, there is a lawn with flower beds and a pathway where a group of people is walking. In the background, trees are visible on the right, and the Odesa Gulf of the Black Sea can be seen behind the columns on the left.
Historical note
The colonnade was built in 1826–1828 designed by architect Francesco Boffo as part of the estate of Governor-General Mikhail Vorontsov. During the Soviet period, starting in the 1930s, the palace housed the Palace of Pioneers, which is why the landmark was often labeled as the ‘Colonnade near the Palace of Pioneers.’
Present day
Today, this cultural heritage site is known as the Vorontsov Colonnade. Between 2017 and 2019, a major restoration was carried out, restoring the monument’s historical appearance and strengthening its foundation. The Colonnade remains one of Odesa’s key landmarks.
