What is shown on the postcard
The postcard shows the main facade of the two-story Neoclassical building with a monumental Corinthian colonnade. The flag of the Ukrainian SSR is flown on the roof. Sculptures are visible in the niches on both sides of the colonnade. In front of the building, there is an asphalted square with parked GAZ-21 Volga cars and a few pedestrians.
Historical note
The building’s construction began in 1829 under the design of architect Franz Boffo and was completed in 1837 as the first Odesa Stock Exchange. In 1871–1873, the structure underwent a major reconstruction designed by Francesco Morandi, which enclosed the inner courtyard into the White Hall and reshaped the facade. From the late 19th century, it housed the City Duma, and during the Soviet period, it was used by the City Executive Committee.
Present day
Today, the building houses the Odesa City Council. This architectural monument of national significance is fully restored, preserving its facade sculptures and the famous clock chiming the tune of “By the Black Sea”.
