A 1981 Soviet collectible postcard capturing the historic fountain in the City Garden of Odesa during the height of the summer season.

What is shown on the postcard

The photograph closely captures an active fountain designed as an ornamental stone bowl (chalice) on a pedestal. A tall vertical jet of water shoots from the center of the bowl, surrounded by smaller water splashes. The foreground features a green lawn with a bed of red cannas. In the background, dense crowns of park trees are visible, while the top of the frame is framed by overhanging tree branches.

Historical note

The City Garden of Odesa, founded by Felix de Ribas in the early 19th century, is the oldest public park in the city. The fountain in the center of the garden has traditionally served as the key compositional element of the park area. During the Soviet period, the garden remained a popular destination for locals and tourists, and its fountain was reconstructed multiple times while preserving its classical architectural shapes.

Present day

Today, the City Garden on Derybasivska Street remains one of Odesa’s main landmarks. In 2007, a major restoration of the central fountain was completed, converting it into a musical fountain. The modern bowl is crafted from Carrara marble, and computer systems regulate the water jets and illumination synchronized with classical music.
