Historical note
The monument was unveiled in Odesa in 1972 within the newly established Maxim Gorky Park of Culture and Leisure (founded in 1961 in the Cheremushky residential district). It was designed by the prominent Odesa sculptor Alexander Knyazik and architect Vladimir Golod.
Present day
As part of decolonization and de-russification efforts in Ukraine, the monument to Maxim Gorky was dismantled in 2023 and moved to storage. In 2024, the park itself was officially renamed in honor of Mark Twain.
