A collectible Soviet postcard from 1981 featuring an aerial view of Kulykove Pole Square in Odesa and the monumental building of the Regional Committee of the Communist Party.
What is shown on the postcard
The image captures an elevated view of Kulykove Pole Square. In the center stands a four-story administrative building characterized by a massive six-column Corinthian portico. A bronze statue of V. I. Lenin on a granite pedestal is positioned in front of the main entrance. The surrounding grounds are landscaped with decorative spruce trees, lawns, and a few pedestrians are visible on the square.
Historical note
The administrative building was built in 1958, designed by architects G. Topuz and A. Vladimirska, for the Odesa Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. The monument to V. I. Lenin in front of the building was unveiled in 1967 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. During the Soviet period, the square served as the primary venue for military parades and public demonstrations.
Present day
In the post-Soviet period, the building was transferred to the Federation of Trade Unions of the Odesa Oblast and became known as the House of Trade Unions. In 2006, the Lenin monument was dismantled and moved to Savitsky Park. In May 2014, the building and the square became the site of tragic clashes. Today, Kulykove Pole Square remains one of Odesa’s largest open public spaces.
