A 1981 Soviet postcard showing the building of the Odessa Regional Committee of the Communist Party on Kulikovo Pole Square.

What is shown on the postcard

The high-angle photograph captures a monumental five-story administrative building in the Soviet classicist style, featuring a massive portico and columns. In front of the building lies the spacious Kulikovo Pole Square with a monument to V. I. Lenin, lawns, and walking figures. In the background, green city zones and the tracks of the Odessa railway station are visible.

Historical note

The building was constructed between 1956 and 1958, designed by architects G. V. Topuz and L. N. Pavlov to house the Odessa Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. The monument to V. I. Lenin in front of it was installed in 1967 to mark the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution (sculptor M. Manizer).

Present day

In the post-Soviet period, the building was transferred to the Federation of Trade Unions of the Odessa Oblast. In 2006, the Lenin monument was dismantled and relocated to a park in the Savran region. The building itself was heavily damaged during the tragic events of May 2, 2014, and currently does not operate.
