What is shown on the postcard
The image shows a close-up of the bronze bust of Grigory Vakulenchuk, mounted on a tall, four-sided red granite pedestal. The front of the pedestal features the incised Russian inscription: ‘ГРИГОРИЙ НИКИТОВИЧ ВАКУЛЕНЧУК 1875-1905’. Below the inscription, a bronze wreath with a torch is affixed, adorned with a fresh red carnation. Thick green tree branches form the background.
Historical note
Grigory Vakulenchuk was a non-commissioned officer of the Black Sea Fleet and one of the key organizers and leaders of the uprising on the battleship Potemkin in June 1905. The monument to the heroic sailor, designed by sculptor A. Kovalev and architect V. Gnezdilov, was unveiled in Odessa in 1958 on Mytna (then Vakulenchuka) Square, near the entrance to the port.
Present day
In 2007, during the reconstruction of the monument to the Founders of Odessa on Catherine Square, the ‘To Potemkin Sailors’ monument was relocated to Mytna Square. Consequently, the monument to Grigory Vakulenchuk was moved from its original location to the street named after him (now Fedor Senyavin Street) near the Tairovske Cemetery.
