This 1973 Soviet postcard features the monumental sculpture dedicated to the mutinous sailors of the battleship Potemkin, erected in Odessa.
What is shown on the postcard
The postcard depicts a multi-figure bronze sculptural group of sailors breaking out from under a canvas tarpaulin. The sculpture is mounted on a massive trapezoidal granite pedestal. On the front of the pedestal, the dates ‘1905-1965’ are visible, along with an engraved quote by V.I. Lenin regarding the battleship Potemkin. In the background, part of a historical building’s classical facade is visible on the right, and green tree branches stand against a clear sky on the left.
Historical note
The monument ‘To the Potemkin Sailors from Their Descendants’ was unveiled in Odessa in 1965, marking the 60th anniversary of the June 1905 uprising on the Black Sea battleship. The monument was created by sculptor V. Bogdanov and architects M. Volkov and Y. Lapin. Until 2007, it stood in the center of Katerynynska Square (known as Potemkin Square during the Soviet era), on the site where the monument to the founders of Odessa originally stood and was later restored.
Present day
In 2007, as part of the reconstruction of Katerynynska Square, the Potemkin monument was dismantled and relocated to Customs Square (Mytna Square), near the entrance to the Port of Odessa. The monument remains fully preserved and integrated into the maritime surroundings of the port area.
