What is shown on the postcard
The postcard shows the bronze bust of the poet A. S. Pushkin in profile, mounted on a high granite pedestal. The front of the pedestal features the commemorative inscription: “А. С. Пушкину граждане Одессы” (To A. S. Pushkin from the citizens of Odesa). The base of the monument integrates fountain elements with stylized cast-iron bowls and dolphin figures discharging thin streams of water. The scene is captured in summer against a backdrop of dense green foliage along Primorsky Boulevard.
Historical note
The monument to A. S. Pushkin in Odesa was erected on the initiative of the city’s public through funds collected by subscription. The monument was unveiled on April 16, 1889. The author of the bust was sculptor Josephine Polonskaya, while the architectural portion and construction supervision were managed by architect Khrisanf Vasiliev. The bust was cast in bronze at the Moran foundry in St. Petersburg.
Present day
Today, the monument remains in its historic location on Primorsky Boulevard in front of the former Old Exchange building (now the Odesa City Council). It is registered on the list of cultural heritage sites of national significance in Ukraine.
