What is shown on the postcard

The image shows the theater’s grand staircase decorated in late Baroque (Rococo) style. Visible details include richly ornamented gilded balustrades, marble steps covered with red carpet runners, and decorative floor lamps styled as gilded sculptures. The walls and vaulted ceilings are adorned with dense stucco work, pilasters, putti sculptures, and allegorical figures. The word “ОДЕССА” (Odesa) is printed in the top right corner.

Historical note

The Odesa Opera House was constructed in 1887 by the renowned Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, replacing the older theatre building that burned down in 1873. The interior design reflects the Viennese Baroque style and is famous for its exceptional luxury and complex decorative elements. The foyer and grand staircases represent prime examples of grand theatrical architecture of the late 19th century.

Present day

Today, the building is known as the Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. It has fully retained its historical appearance, including the interior elements shown on the postcard. Comprehensive restoration works carried out in the late 20th and early 21st centuries stabilized the building’s foundation and restored the gilding and stucco decoration of the interiors.
