This collectible Soviet postcard from 1973 showcases the widescreen Ukraina Cinema, located in Luhansk (known as Voroshilovgrad at the time of publication).
What is shown on the postcard
The front side of the postcard depicts the modernist cinema building featuring a panoramic glazed facade. A large sign reading “Кино Украина Театр” is mounted above the entrance. In front of the building, there is a rectangular flowerbed with green bushes framed by a concrete curb. Passersby in summer attire are visible in the foreground and along the pedestrian path. To the right of the square, an alley lined with tall poplars runs parallel to a road with public transport. In the lower-left corner, the bilingual inscription “ВОРОШИЛОВГРАД · VOROSHILOVGRAD” is printed.
Historical note
Opened in 1964, the Ukraina Cinema became one of the main cultural and entertainment venues in the regional center. The standard design of a widescreen cinema was adapted to the urban planning context of the square on Oboronna Street. The building was characterized by its concise forms, combining solid reinforced concrete side pylons with continuous glazing of the foyer—a hallmark of Soviet modernist architecture of the 1960s.
Present day
In the post-Soviet period, the building retained its main architectural features, though its function and name were subsequently altered. The cinema was renamed “Rus” and underwent renovation of its interior premises. The surrounding area was also remodeled, with updated pedestrian pavements and revitalized green spaces.
