Historical note
Frunze Street (formerly Kobelyakska, currently Yevropeiska) is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares, leading southwest from the historical center. Following the destruction of World War II, the street was rebuilt with new apartment buildings designed by Soviet architects, defining the city’s post-war monumental appearance. Opposite the featured buildings, a public square was laid out, later dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of Poltava.
Present day
In 2016, as part of decommunization, Frunze Street was renamed Yevropeiska (European) Street. The Stalinist-era residential buildings have survived and continue to serve their original functions, with ground floors occupied by shops and cafes while upper floors remain residential. The square opposite them is now named after Heorhiy Gongadze (formerly the 1100th Anniversary of Poltava Square).
