This 1976 Soviet postcard features the Chkalov widescreen cinema in Khmelnytskyi, built in the monumental Stalinist Neoclassical style.
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the main facade of the building with a massive portico supported by six rectangular columns. A large sign on the roof in Ukrainian reads “Широкоекранний кінотеатр ім. Чкалова” (Chkalov Widescreen Cinema). To the left and right of the central entrance, movie posters are displayed, including one for the Romanian film “The Last Bullet” (1973). Passersby are seen on the steps and the square in front of the entrance.
Historical note
The Chkalov Cinema was opened in November 1940 in Khmelnytskyi (then known as Proskuriv). At the time of its opening, it was the city’s primary and most modern cinema venue. The building was designed in the monumental Soviet Neoclassical style typical of the pre-war period.
Present day
Today, the building at 43 Proskurivska Street houses the Khmelnytskyi Regional Center of Culture and Art. Although it no longer functions as a cinema, the architectural exterior, including its grand portico and colonnade, remains well-preserved.
