A 1964 Soviet color postcard showing the blooming chestnut alley on Khreshchatyk Street in Kyiv.

What is shown on the postcard

The image captures the pedestrian alley of Khreshchatyk during the spring blooming of chestnut trees. Dense trees lined with white cone-shaped blossoms grow on both sides of the asphalt path. People dressed in 1960s attire are walking along the alley: in the foreground, a woman pushes a green baby stroller, other pedestrians are visible in the distance, and citizens are sitting on park benches to the right.

Historical note

Chestnut trees became an unofficial symbol of Kyiv back in the 19th century. However, the systematic planting of these trees on Khreshchatyk on a large scale began during the post-war reconstruction of the destroyed street in the late 1940s and 1950s. The boulevard area with a chestnut alley was designed as an integral part of the new architectural ensemble of the capital’s main street.

Present day

In the modern period, the chestnut trees on Khreshchatyk regularly suffer from exhaust fumes, the use of road salt during winter, and pests (such as the leaf-miner moth). During urban reconstructions, discussions and attempts to renew the greenery take place periodically, including planting more resilient chestnut varieties or alternative tree species, but the chestnut alley remains a vital historical and cultural element of Khreshchatyk.
