What is shown on the postcard
The image displays a perspective of the street ascending towards the Golden Gate. In the foreground on the left is the building with arched windows (Khreshchatyk, 32), and on the right is a wing of a residential building with an arcade (Khreshchatyk, 28). A few Soviet passenger cars, pedestrians on the sidewalks, and young trees are visible.
Historical note
The street was laid out in the 1830s and was originally named Prorizna. From 1919 to 1990, it was named after the Soviet state figure Yakov Sverdlov. The architectural ensemble of the lower section of the street was almost entirely destroyed during World War II and reconstructed in the 1950s in the post-war neoclassical style.
Present day
In 1990, the street’s historical name, Prorizna, was restored. Today, this urban junction retains its historical appearance and remains an important part of Kyiv’s central pedestrian and tourist route.
