What is shown on the postcard
A monumental Lenin sculpture on a pedestal dominates the foreground; public buildings and scattered trees appear behind. The card records the appearance of the city’s main square in the mid-1960s.
Historical note
The monument was unveiled on 5 December 1946; sculptor Sergey Merkurov. It stood on October Revolution Square (historically part of Khreshchatyk near the conservatoire), the central city square in the Soviet period.
Present day
The monument was removed in December 2013 during events on the square, now Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square). The postcard documents how the square looked with the statue in 1964.
