What is shown on the postcard
The postcard shows the main facade of the Verkhovna Rada building with its colonnade and glass dome topped by a flagpole. A wing of the adjacent Mariinskyi Palace with a decorative balustrade is visible on the right. In the foreground, the paved Constitution Square is shown with pedestrians, streetlights, and flowerbeds with cannas.
Historical note
The building was constructed in 1936–1939 designed by architect Volodymyr Zabolotny for the supreme legislative body of the UkrSSR. The architect was awarded the State Prize for this project. During World War II, the building was damaged by fire and restored in 1945–1947 under Zabolotny’s supervision, preserving its original style.
Present day
Today, this building houses the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the country’s sole legislative body. The Soviet emblem on the facade has been replaced by the Ukrainian Tryzub, and the blue-and-yellow national flag flies above the dome.
