What is shown on the postcard

The postcard captures the October Palace of Culture, a monumental building with a semi-circular colonnade situated on a hill. A multi-tiered reinforced concrete staircase with street lanterns leads up to it. The hillsides are landscaped with trees and decorative shrubs.

Historical note

The building was constructed between 1838 and 1842 based on a design by architect Vikentiy Beretti for the Institute for Noble Maidens. During the Soviet era, following severe damage in World War II, the building was reconstructed between 1952 and 1957 under the supervision of architect Oleksiy Zavarov to serve as a Palace of Culture.

Present day

Currently, the building functions as the International Center of Culture and Arts. It is located in the center of Kyiv, near Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti). The architectural monument’s address is 1 Alei Heroiv Nebesnoi Sotni.
