Historical note
The Shevchenko monument, designed by sculptor Matvey Manizer and architect Evgeny Levinson, was unveiled on March 6, 1939, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the poet’s birth. The monument replaced the previous statue of Russian Emperor Nicholas I, which stood on this spot and was dismantled in 1920. The bronze statue, measuring 5.8 meters in height, stands on an 8.4-meter pedestal.
Present day
Today, the monument and the surrounding Taras Shevchenko Park are recognized cultural heritage sites of Ukraine. The park remains a popular public space, and the monument itself serves as a traditional location for official and public commemorative events dedicated to the Ukrainian poet.
