This collectible Soviet postcard from 1965 presents a view of the Central Railway Station building in Kyiv from Vokzalna Square.

What is shown on the postcard

In the left foreground, an ornate metal gate is visible. On the square in front of the station, a group of people is depicted: two women and two children in light summer clothes, with woven baskets placed on the pavement next to them. On the left, a light-blue vintage passenger car (GAZ-21 Volga) is parked. In the background, the main station building rises, featuring its characteristic large arched glazing, a central clock, and the Soviet emblem on the pediment. Numerous pedestrians are seen near the entrance.

Historical note

The main building of the Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi railway station was constructed between 1927 and 1932, designed by architect Oleksandr Verbytskyi in a style blending Ukrainian Baroque with Constructivism. The immense parabolic arch of the main vestibule became a signature landmark of the city. In the post-war years, the station underwent modifications, including renovations of its interior halls and facade decorations.

Present day

Today, the building remains a vital part of the Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi railway station complex. A major renovation in 2001 updated the station’s facilities and added the Pivdennyi (Southern) Station building, linked to the Central Station by a pedestrian concourse. The historic facade designed by Verbytskyi was carefully preserved.
