A 1983 Soviet collectible postcard capturing the Kyiv branch of the Central V. I. Lenin Museum, built in the style of Soviet modernism on Leninsky Komsomol Square (now European Square).
What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the main facade of the monumental four-story building, faced with light marble. Numerous groups of people are seen ascending the wide granite steps leading to the entrance. In the foreground is the paved roadway of the square with a pedestrian crossing. In the background, the distinctive circular upper volume of the building stands out against a cloudy sky.
Historical note
The construction of the building took place from 1978 to 1982 on the site of the demolished three-story Yevropeysky Hotel. The grand opening of the Kyiv branch of the Central V.I. Lenin Museum was held in 1982 to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the USSR. The architectural design was created by a team led by V. Gopkalo. The museum’s original exhibition focused on the life and legacy of the Soviet leader.
Present day
In April 1993, the building was reorganized and renamed the Ukrainian House (now the Ukrainian House National Center for Business and Cultural Cooperation). Today, it serves as a major venue for art exhibitions, fairs, corporate events, forums, and various social and cultural state events.
