This postcard presents a view of a part of the Donetsk National University complex, dating back to 1983. The image captures two iconic buildings of the university: the monumental main building with a colonnade and dome, and a modern high-rise academic building.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard features two buildings belonging to the Donetsk National University complex. On the right is the main building, executed in the Stalinist Empire style, with characteristic symmetry, six-column porticoes on the lateral risalits, and a central dome. On the left, a high-rise building, constructed later, is visible, representing a typical example of Soviet architecture of the 1970s-1980s with characteristic glazing and cladding.

Historical note

Donetsk National University (DonNU) was founded in 1921. The main university building, depicted on the postcard, is an architectural monument built in the 1940s. The high-rise building, also featured on the card, was erected later, during a period of active development of the city’s educational infrastructure. In 1983, the university was one of the leading educational and scientific centers of the Ukrainian SSR.

Present day

Currently, Donetsk National University continues to operate. The main building remains one of the city’s architectural dominants, and the high-rise building is used for academic purposes. Due to the events in eastern Ukraine, the university has temporarily relocated its activities to the city of Vinnytsia, but the historic buildings in Donetsk retain their significance as architectural and educational history monuments.
