The postcard shows a close-up of the upper part of the V. I. Lenin monument. A bronze half-figure of Lenin, looking to the left, is installed on a tall pedestal made of dark-red granite. On the front of the pedestal is a metal inscription in Ukrainian reading “В. І. ЛЕНІН”, below which is a relief coat of arms of the USSR. The background is a clear sky.

Historical note

The monument was officially unveiled on January 20, 1952, in front of the Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre. The sculptor was the renowned Soviet artist Sergey Merkurov, and the architects were V. Sharapenko and S. Yakovlev. The monument served as the central element of the Soviet architectural ensemble of the city’s main street (then Lenina Avenue).

Present day

On September 14, 1990, by decision of the Lviv City Council, the Lenin monument was dismantled. This was the first instance of a Lenin monument being removed in a regional center of the Ukrainian SSR. Currently, the square in front of the Opera House is used for public events, while the monument itself has been completely dismantled and its materials recycled.
