What is shown on the postcard

The left side of the postcard depicts the Monument of Glory, featuring bronze sculptures of a soldier and the Motherland figure against a relief-carved pylon. The right side shows the bustling Lenina Avenue with pedestrians, Soviet ‘Zhiguli’ cars, historic facades, and a well-kept flower bed in the foreground.

Historical note

The Monument of Military Glory of the Soviet Armed Forces was unveiled in Lviv in 1970 on Stryiska Street. Lenina Avenue, the city’s main thoroughfare, served as the hub of social and cultural life during the Soviet period while preserving its unique late 19th and early 20th-century architecture.

Present day

As part of decommunization, the Monument of Glory in Lviv was gradually dismantled between 2018 and 2021, with its elements transferred to the ‘Territory of Terror’ museum. In 1990, Lenina Avenue was renamed Svobody Avenue; it remains the city’s central promenade, hosting the Opera House and the Taras Shevchenko monument.
