What is shown on the postcard
The top part of the postcard shows the monument to V.I. Lenin, represented by a bronze bust-half-figure on a tall, polished dark-red granite pedestal decorated with a relief of the coat of arms of the USSR, surrounded by flowerbeds. The bottom section depicts the Neo-Renaissance facade of the museum building with its characteristic dome, featuring a parked yellow Soviet car and pedestrians in the foreground.
Historical note
The Lenin monument in Lviv, designed by sculptor S. Merkurov and architects V. Sharapov and S. Yakovlev, was unveiled in 1952 on the city’s central avenue. The museum building shown below was constructed between 1898 and 1904 based on the design of architect Józef Kajetan Janowski for the Municipal Industrial Museum. During the Soviet period, from 1950 to 1990, it housed the Lviv branch of the Central Lenin Museum.
Present day
The Lenin monument was dismantled on September 14, 1990. Today, the historic Industrial Museum building at 20 Svobody Avenue houses the Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv.
