Historical note
Chernecha Hill in Kaniv became the burial site of Taras Shevchenko in May 1861, in accordance with his last will. The first folk monument, a wooden cross, was installed shortly after. In 1939, the modern bronze monument designed by sculptor Matvey Manizer and architect Yevgeny Levinson was opened alongside the museum building. The site holds the status of a national preserve.
Present day
Today, the Shevchenko National Preserve in Kaniv remains one of Ukraine’s most significant cultural and historical landmarks. The memorial complex is well-maintained, with both the monument and the museum fully restored, continuing to attract thousands of visitors annually.
