What is shown on the postcard
The postcard shows a view of the administrative and industrial buildings of the “Pishmash” factory. Atop the nine-story administrative building, a Ukrainian sign reads “ЗАВОД ДРУКАРСЬКИХ МАШИН”. In the foreground is an asphalt road with streetlights, separated by a landscaped lawn with flowerbeds and young trees.
In the background on the left, multi-story residential buildings are visible, one of which features the Soviet slogan “МИРУ — МИР!”. Pedestrians are walking along the pathway.
Historical note
The Kirovograd Production Association “Pishmash” (originally the Kirovograd Typewriter Factory) was founded in the 1970s and became one of the largest enterprises in the USSR for the production of office and portable typewriters, notably the “Yatran” brand.
The massive industrial complex defined the architectural character of this city district, which developed rapidly during the 1970s and 1980s.
Present day
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the decline in demand for manual typewriters, the enterprise ceased its main manufacturing operations. Today, the administrative and production buildings of the former factory have been partially converted into commercial, office, and warehouse facilities.
Soviet-era slogans and the old sign have been removed from the rooftops.
