A 1977 Soviet collectible postcard featuring the modernist building of the ‘Khimik’ Palace of Culture in Dniprodzerzhynsk (now Kamianske) and a performance by a folk bandura ensemble.
What is shown on the postcard
The left side of the postcard depicts the square in front of the Chemists’ Palace of Culture, showcasing an active multi-jet fountain in a concrete pool. In the background stands the modernist building of the Palace of Culture, featuring vertical concrete pylons on its facade and a mosaic mural on the side wall of the stage tower. People are seen walking in the square. The right side of the postcard features an inset showing an ensemble of four performers (two women and two men) in traditional Ukrainian costumes playing the bandura.
Historical note
The ‘Khimik’ Palace of Culture, built for the Dniprodzerzhynsk Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant (later ‘Azot’ Production Association, now JSC ‘DniproAzot’), opened in 1970. It served as a major cultural and recreational hub for the city’s chemical industry workers. The venue hosted numerous amateur art groups, including the bandura ensemble depicted on the postcard, which promoted Ukrainian folk music.
Present day
Today, the building continues to operate as the ‘Khimik’ Palace of Culture of JSC ‘DniproAzot’. It remains a venue for city events, concerts, and theatrical performances. The Soviet modernist architecture, including the original mosaic on the facade, remains largely intact, though the fountain complex in front of it has undergone various renovations over the years.
