Card Yerevan. Hotel “Armenia”, 1971

A 1971 postcard from Yerevan presents the architectural ensemble of Republic Square, focusing on the “Armenia” Hotel building.

What is shown on the postcard

The postcard depicts the “Armenia” Hotel in Yerevan, published in 1971. The building is designed in a monumental style, characteristic of Soviet architecture of that period, with elements of Armenian national architecture. The facade, clad in pink tuff, adorned with arches and columns, is reflected in the water’s surface. In front of the hotel, green plantings and several vehicles, presumably Soviet models, as well as buses, are visible.

Part of the Republic Square ensemble is also visible on the right, continuing the overall architectural theme. The inscription “ГОСТИНИЦА АРМЕНИЯ” (HOTEL ARMENIA) is clearly distinguishable on the building’s roof.

Historical note

The “Armenia” Hotel was built as part of the overall architectural ensemble of Yerevan’s main square – Lenin Square (now Republic Square). The square’s design began in the 1920s, and the hotel was one of its key elements, completed in 1958. Architects: Samvel Safaryan, Varazdat Arevshatyan, Eduard Sarapyan. The building was notable for its use of local pink tuff, which gave it a distinctive appearance, and was one of the most prestigious hotels in the Armenian SSR.

Its location on the main square, next to the Government House and other significant buildings, underscored its status as an important urban infrastructure object and a landmark of the Armenian capital.

Present day

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, in 1998, the “Armenia” Hotel was privatized and extensively renovated, reopening in 1999 under the brand “Armenia Marriott Hotel Yerevan”. It continues to be one of Yerevan’s largest and most famous hotels, retaining its historic location and architectural significance on Republic Square.
