This 1973 Soviet collectible postcard features a view of the Odessa City Executive Committee building (former Old Stock Exchange) located on Dumskaya Square.
What is shown on the postcard
The foreground shows the paved square in front of the Odessa City Executive Committee building. Pedestrians in summer attire from the Soviet era are visible on the square, along with parked grey GAZ-21 “Volga” cars and a dark-colored vehicle on the left. The two-story Classicist building is adorned with a double-row Corinthian colonnade, sculptures in the niches of the wings, and a sculptural clock group above the main cornice. The flag of the Ukrainian SSR flies on the roof. To the left in the background, the trees of Primorsky Boulevard and the outlines of port cranes are visible.
Historical note
The building’s construction began in 1829 based on a design by architect Franz Boffo for the Odessa Merchant Exchange, and was completed in 1837. In the late 19th century, the building was reconstructed by architect Albert Scheins to accommodate the City Duma. During the Soviet era, it housed the City Executive Committee (Gorispolkom) and the Council of People’s Deputies.
Present day
Today, the historical Old Stock Exchange building retains its administrative function, housing the Odessa City Council. The square in front of it is named Dumskaya Square, and the structure is designated as an architectural monument of national importance.
